White Greyhounds will usually shed more than others. This is mainly in May and June. A "hack saw blade" is a great way to brush the loose hair out. Do it outside. The first year hair change is more dramatic. Hair is a little more consistent after the first year of being a pet.

If you use Frontline....it does fleas only for up to 12 weeks, if you have ticks you need to use it monthly.

All Greyhounds will and can sunburn. White dogs with pinker skin are usually more easily burned. USE SUNBLOCK if your Greyhound has to be out in the sun for any length of time. You can use people sunblock or buy some at Petsmart.

Get your Greyhound a 12" deep children's pool. Many love to lay in the water in a kiddie pool.

HEAT STRESS! Heat stress can kill your Greyhound. If your dog is overheated due to running in 90+ degrees because he got lost or some such thing (do not let him run in 90+ degrees if you have a choice) then you need to get them cooled down very quickly! The kiddie pool would be good for this if it is near. Otherwise find a hose and hose them down, use ice if you have that available.

Be sure your dog has access to PLENTY of fresh water.

Stool Guards - If your dog is eating grass and dirt chronically you may want to use this. Eating dirt can lead to diarrhea. Once you clear up the diarrhea with an antibiotic and if he is still eating dirt, it will probably recur within two weeks. So, you make them wear a muzzle with a stool guard in it when they go outside. (They are approximately $5 and can be purchased at Dresslers in Kansas City among other places.) Keep Pepto Bismol Caplets around too for diarrhea and roaring stomach noises from eating grass. Give 1 every 4 - 6 hours.
